Intro: Emotions are an important part of everyday life, and we often wrongly see them as either a goad or a guide.
Truth: Paul shows us in Philippians 4:4-7 that emotions are actually a gauge. Our feelings tell us what’s broken inside of us, and the fix is bringing them to God in Christ.
The Point: When you see through the lens of the gospel, you’ll find peace in peaceless situations.
Intro: Anxiety is very real, very common, and very destructive.
Truth: Ultimately, though, it comes back to how much you trust God. In Matthew 13:22, we see that the Good News is always good enough, but anxiety can destroy our faith in it. The enemy wants you to doubt that the Good News is good enough RIGHT NOW. He wants you to believe that God can handle your eternity, but not your present.
The Point: When you see through the lens of the gospel, anxiety won’t choke out your faith.
Intro: Anger is powerful, unpleasant, and sometimes downright destructive. And it shows us what we care about most.
Truth: In Jonah 4:1-3, we see that because Jonah cared most about himself, his anger led him away from God’s plan for the redemption of the Ninevites.
The Point: When you see through the lens of the gospel, your anger will lead toward hope for redemption.
Intro: Most of us want to experience as much happiness as possible as often as possible. But life is hard, and happiness is fleeting.
Truth: Fortunately, James 1:2-3 points us to something far more stable than happiness: joy. Joy is something we can experience even in the midst of hard times. When we realize that Jesus saved us from our sin and not from all difficult situations, we’ll be able to find joy in the process of becoming more like Him through our most difficult times.
The Point: When you see through the lens of the gospel, becoming more like Jesus will bring you joy.
